Casey Jergens is a kindergarten teacher in Edina, Minnesota. He has a degree in elementary education from the University of Northern Iowa and a graduate degree in culturally responsive teaching from Drake University. Casey has taught kindergarten and first grade in rural, urban, and suburban settings. His science of reading journey began in 2017 when he was trained in Orton Gillingham. This changed the way he approached teaching foundational literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency. In 2020, his district adopted a content literacy curriculum and he continued to build his knowledge of reading science with regard to content, writing, vocabulary, and comprehension. He has aided teachers through this process in different building and district leadership roles, in addition to teaching. Casey continues to stay up to date on the latest research related to early literacy instruction and shift his practice. He is committed to bringing culturally responsive structured literacy practices to his classroom and sharing his work with other educators.
